While many retailers nationwide have closed stores during the recession, Lumber Liquidators has opened them — 34 in 2008 and 36 in 2009.

This year, the Toano-based company specializing in hardwood floors aims to open another 36 to 40 stores, including its first in Canada.

"Weve been hiring through the recession," said Jeffrey W. Griffiths, president and chief executive.
