Log Imports Declined, Price Increased

Log imports declined in the first five months in Jiangsu Port, however, the price increased oppositely.

According to the Nanjin Customs statistics, the log imports totaled about 3.41 million m3 in the first five months of this year in Jiangsu Port, down 5.8% over the previous year; the import value was US$750 million, down 2.1%.

The main features of log imports in Jiangsu Port are as follows:

First, trade import was dominant. The log imports by means of trade amounted to 3.21 million m3, down 5.1%, which accounted for 94.1% of the total log imports in Jiangsu Port.

Second, the log imports from Papua New Guinea increased, whereas, from Russia and Gabon declined. The log imports from those three countries were 1.11 million m3, 0.63 million m3 and 0.42 million m3 respectively in the first five months of 2008, accounting for 63.7% of the total log imports in Jiangsu Port.

Third, the private companies and foreign funded companies were the main importers. About 1.62 million m3 and 1.43 million m3 of logs in Jiangsu Port were imported by private companies and foreign funded companies respectively, all down 9.2%, which accounted for 89.4% of the total.
