Timber import at Manzhouli port, Inner Mongolia has emerged since the beginning of 2008: Imports of lumber surged and imports of logs declined. By Jan 15, Manzhouli port totally imported 52,000 m3 or USD12.585 million of lumber, rocketing by 51% and 207% respectively. In the meantime, the imports of logs were 336,000 m3, amounting to USD41.47 million, falling by 28% in volume and 23% in value.
The major cause attributable to the changes is thought to be Russia’s encouraging domestic timber processing and at the same time curbing log export by raising export taxes.
